To movie people if it is on rails and blows steam it is a train, and that is all that matters. There have been two "history" segments filmed on the Sumpter Valley. One of them was for a PBS series on the Chinese in America (building the transcontinental railroad) and the other was for a History Channel program on Jesse James. Not only was the equipment wrong but so was the gauge. It didn't matter much on the Jesse James part though. If you looked away from your TV for a moment you would have missed it. And this took two days of filming.

It does help pay the bills though.

Interesting pics of the restoration on the SVRy website.

Curious as to the source for the replacement oak end beams. Are these White Oak? Also, did your shop do the shaping/fabrication? We need to obtain similar oak beams for the C&S 1008 in the near future.

Thanks

This is a treat of a lifetime. On last year's trip the geologists were very helpful and described the many interesting features along the ride. We were able to disembark and study the different formations and how they were formed. It's a narrow gauge classroom with a country wide view. It can't get better than this!

I really recommend this trip.

The gon was not crowded for most of the trip. There were a few more people out there on the high line area.
Riding in winter has several advantages. The train is less crowded, the tickets are less expensive, and the trip is shorter which is good for the kids.

Well we had better find the freight logs....where is that crew guy when you need him.

I am pretty sure my dad and I shot 494 and 495 in 1961. This is what I remember---we disagreed with Earl's date of 1961 for 495. So either my shot is 1960, or the 495 lasted longer than Earl's date.

One of these days I need to find these old B&W prints and have a go at scanning the negs if they are still with the prints.

Thanks for the notes Earl.

In the book, "Robert W. Richardson's Chasing the Narrow Gauge, Vol II", on p.70 he has printed a summary of the D&RGW narrow gauge equipment on the roster as of January 1 1948. All the locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, non-revenue equipment, and miscellaneous equipment are listed.

It's the miscellaneous equipment listings that has me curious.

It shows, for example, 2 motor inspection cars and 389 motor maintainance-of-way cars.Where did they keep 389 motor m-o-w cars? That seems like a lot of jiggers, pop-cars or whatever you call them down there, just for the narrow gauge lines.

It shows 5 station wagons, 8 sedans, 2 coupes, 2 "Reconnaisance cars" and 1 passenger bus. Where were all these vehicles kept? Who got to drive them, or have one assigned to his/her use? Were they all painted/lettered in a particular pattern? Any pictures of any of these vehicles out there? Anyone modelling the narrow gauge before 1948 will certainly want to see one of these. I would like to know what the bus was!

And what were those 2 "Reconnaisance cars"? Cars with radar-toting supervisors out to catch speeding engineers?

I believe they both last ran in 1962 Greg. The 498 took the 494's tender after it came out of the shops from the derailment near Cumbres in 1960. I'm sure Earl will get us all straightened out.

Rich thanks for posting such a cool pic! K-37..yeah!

I thought the 494 and 495 both were retired at the end of 1961 or sometime in 1961. Where's Earl?

I used to have a file around someplace with info(can't find it now) on when these engines made the last runs(years)...Anyone have that stuff??

I'm surprised by your comment, not saying you are wrong, just don't remember it that way. I miss those HoJo's. The fast food joints that have replaced them may be faster, but the ol' HoJo's were better (IMHO, anyway ;)).
